Spectra of black-hole binaries in the low/hard state: from radio to X-rays
نویسنده
چکیده
We propose a jet model for the low/hard state of Galactic black-hole X-ray sources that can explain the energy spectra from radio to X-rays. The model assumes that i) there is a magnetic field along the axis of the jet; ii) the electron density in the jet drops inversely proportional to distance; and iii) the electrons in the jet follow a power law distribution function. We have performed Monte Carlo simulations of Compton upscattering of soft photons from the accretion disk and have found power-law high-energy spectra with photon-number index in the range 1.5 2 and cutoff at a few hundred keV. The spectrum at long wavelengths (radio, infrared, optical) is modeled to come from synchrotron radiation of the energetic electrons in the jet. We find flat to inverted radio spectra that extend from the radio up to about the optical band. For magnetic field strengths of the order of 10 − 10G at the base of the jet, the calculated spectra agree well in slope and flux with the observations. Our model has the advantage over other existing models that it also explains many of the existing timing data such as the time lag spectra, the hardening of the power density spectra and the narrowing of the autocorrelation function with increasing photon energy.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

Selected topics dealing with X-ray/soft γ-ray emission from accreting black-hole sources are reviewed. The shape of soft γ-ray spectra of Seyferts observed by OSSE can be well modeled by thermal Comptonization. A very strong correlation between the X-ray slope and the strength of Compton reflection in these sources can then be explained by thermal Comptonization in vicinity of the reflecting co...

The question whether quiescent black hole X-ray binaries are capable of powering relativistic outflows is addressed by means of simultaneous radio/X-ray observations of a nearby system steadily emitting X-rays below 10−8 times the Eddington luminosity. The robust detection of a radio counterpart suggests that a synchrotron emitting outflow is being powered by this system, even though its degree...

An empirical relation between 'canonical' X-ray states in black hole X-ray binaries and radio emission is presented. In the Low/Hard state a quasi-continuous radio-emitting jet is produced. In the the High/Soft state the jet is not observed. In the Very High state and at major state transitions, which may correspond physically to rapid and/or significant changes in the inner accretion disc radi...

Four persistent (Cygnus X-1, GX 339-4, GRS 1758-258 and 1E 1740.7-2942) and three transient (GS 2023+38, GRO J0422+32 and GS 1354-64) black hole X-ray binary systems have been extensively observed at radio wavelengths during extended periods in the Low/Hard X-ray state, which is characterised in X-rays by a hard power-law spectrum and strong variability. All seven systems show a persistent flat...
